The second web site in the United Nations organization, www.unric.org, has been launched using Joomla. In December, the United Nations University Centre was launched. This has been followed in June by the United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC). Along with sites like Porsche and Hyundai, seeing bigger organizations using Joomla underlines its reliablity and flexibility.
The new website is based on an open-source content management system (CMS), customized with the help of the online community. The CMS package Joomla was developed in 2005 and was available in all 13 UNRIC languages, courtesy of voluntary efforts by developers around the world. UNRIC's customized CMS is already being used to create websites for other UN information centres, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. The no cost software with its user friendly web-based uploading is a perfect fit for these small offices.
